correct training, good working practice and the utmost respect for an energy source that you cannot see, smell or hear but could kill you in an instant. i spent a substantial part of my apprenticeship working in schools, hospitals, banks and government buildings. the work was varied and ever changing but that is part of the appeal of being a contractor, you never know what tomorrow will bring or what's round the corner! bsi and the iet has launched a summary of the changes that can be expected in the new 18th edition bs 7671:2018 requirements for electrical installations. the new standard will be issued on 2nd july, 2018. electrical contractors and electricians will have a six month transition period to get up to speed with the changes. from january 1 2019, it will then be a requirement that all electrical installations designed after this date comply with bs 7671:2018, 18th edition (2018). the regulations apply to the design, erection and verification of electrical installations, also additions and alterations to existing installations. existing installations that have been installed in accordance with earlier editions of the regulations may not comply with this edition in every respect. this does not necessarily mean that they are unsafe for continued use or require upgrading. this is a short list i have made of some of the most important changes : • reg: 411.3.3 - requires all socket outlets within a dwelling up to 32 amp to be rcd protected. • reg: 411.3.4 - requires all luminaries (light fittings) within a domestic (household) premises to be protected by a 30ma rcd • new reg: 421.1.7 -
